Ski, Surf & Sun
It’s hard to believe that the academic year is almost over. Time really does fly when you’re
having fun. And we are having fun!
A few weekends ago, we had our spring getaway at Bass Lake, just about an hour from
Fresno. We had a ski boat and 3 waverunners. The water was a little cold, but that didn’t matter.
We still had a blast.
Over the last few weeks, Jen and I have entered cyberspace at warp speed. In case you were
unaware, we now have our personal web page up and running (see inset). You’re invited to check it
out and give us your input.
As the semester winds down, we are beginning to change gears and prepare ourselves for our
summer assignment in Colorado. If you’ve never spent some time in Colorado, you should. The
summers are great and it is definitely a preferred alternative over the sweltering heat of the Fresno
sun.
But our job is more than just skiing, surfing the web and taking off every summer to avoid the
Central Valley heat. We spend a lot of hours talking to students about Jesus Christ and helping
students grow and mature in their walks with God.
Jen is having a great impact discipling nearly 10 women every week and giving direction to
women in our ministry. In addition, she has been leading a young women’s Bible study at church
since last summer.
The purpose of our ministry can be illustrated by a student I met named
Eberardo. At Fresno
State, there is a section of campus between the bookstore and the library where many of the student
groups on campus have their club booth. It’s designed to be a place where people from your group
can go and hang out between classes. It’s convenient for us because it gives us an easy place to
meet students.
After going most of the fall without a booth (there are more groups that want a booth space
than there are available booth spaces), we were able to get a booth this semester. The booth next to
us is Alpha Kappa Psi, a business club.
I try to make it a point to get to know the students in the
booths next to us. One of the students I met was Eberardo. Eberardo is a graduating senior and we hit it
off pretty quickly.
I didn’t have a lot of time to talk to Eberardo because of our schedules, but I invited him to come to
our church. I was surprised when I saw him the next week that he took me up on it. Not only that, he said
that he really enjoyed it.
Eberardo and I missed each other over the last several weeks, but two weeks ago, I saw Eberardo and
had a chance to talk to him some more.
I found out that Eberardo has been attending a Bible study through our church and he’s eager to learn
more. I asked Eberardo if he was interested in going through a program called “Operation Timothy”, a
curriculum put together by The Christian Businessman’s Committee designed to give people a solid
foundation in the Christian faith. I was delighted when Eberardo agreed.
That’s the gist of our ministry: finding students who have a spiritual interest and helping them grow
and develop. Please pray for Eberardo as we begin to study the Bible together. And thanks again for your
part in helping us to reach students like Eberardo and others.
