April 1 marks the beginning of the spring quarter here at UC Davis. Looking back on this past year has been great for Dave and me because it helps us to see all of the amazing things that God has done here. Let me share with you some of the things that God has been teaching me here in Davis this year.
Starting a ministry from the ground up seemed like such a difficult task. Honestly, I was wondering how I would handle the situation. Dave is one of those people that I knew would do well in Davis because God has really given him a pioneering spirit. But for me, I was unsure.
This past quarter I was teaching a Bible study, and we were talking about faith. We were reading about David and Goliath in I Samuel 17, and as a group we were discussing the importance of following Christ and overcoming obstacles in our life.
As the women were sharing about the obstacles that they were facing, I became overhwelmed by the Lord’s sovereignty in my situation. If someone had told me 2 years ago that Dave and I would be here now in UC Davis pioneering a new campus ministy I would have laughed (and then I would have been petrified!). But when we trust the Lord and put practical faith into action like David did against Goliath, the Lord comes through to help us slay the “giant” in our life.
What is the “giant” in your life that is an obstacle that needs to be given over to the Lord? For me, the obstacle that I was facing was coming to a brand new town and starting a brand new ministry. God is so faithful - I can honestly say that this year of ministry has been my funnest on staff because I was able to slay my giant of fear of the unknown.
Tricia's Story
One of the things that we pray for as staff is that the students with whom we are working would put what they are learning into practice.
Dave and I have been spending a lot of time teaching the students how to share their faith with others. We want to give these students the tools that will equip them to share Christ for the rest of their lives.
I had a fun experience this past week with Tricia, one of the women with whom I have been working.
Tricia had asked me to pray numerous times for her father, who was not a Christian. He was very antagonistic about spiritual things. She would tell me about her conversations with him, and often he was sarcastic about having faith in Christ.
Two weeks ago at our bible study, Tricia asked us to pray for a trip that she was going to take with her father. As a group we prayed for Tricia’s time with her father.
Last week Tricia came up to me with a huge smile on her face. “Guess what Jen? I shared the Four Spiritual Laws with my father last weekend on our trip, and he became a Christian!” Please pray for Tricia’s father and his new faith in Christ!
