I couldn’t believe it. I was driving back to Davis from a doctor’s appointment in Sacramento
when I noticed the Highway Patrol Car zoom in behind me. I knew I was going to get pulled over
by this guy because I could see him talking into his radio. “Great”, I thought. “I am going to be
late for my 12 o’clock appointment with Lauren!”
Well, I did get pulled over by the highway patrolman, but he was very nice and he just gave
me a fix it ticket. But I was really in a bad mood because I had just gotten a traffic ticket and
Lauren was a girl with whom I did NOT want to miss an appointment.
I first met Lauren at the beginning of the quarter. She was a freshman and had filled out a
spiritual interest questionnaire and was interested in being in a Bible study. I stopped by her
dorm room and she said she really wanted to come to the study, but she didn’t have a bible. I
told her no problem! I would bring her a Bible.
As the quarter went on, Lauren never showed up to the Bible study, but God kept putting her
on my heart. I called her and asked if she still wanted a Bible, and she said she did. I stopped
by her room and gave her the Bible and asked her if I could meet with her later in the quarter
and talk with her about spiritual things.
Well, I called her and we set up an appointment to meet. I could tell she was skeptical, but I
shared The Four Spiritual Laws with her, and she said that there were things in her life that she
wanted to change before she became a Christian. I told her that I understood.
A week later we met to do an investigative study on what happens when you become a
Christian. At the end of the study I said “Lauren, what would keep you from committing your life
to Christ?” Lauren responded, “nothing.” I was SO excited! I encouraged her to take the
Thanksgiving holiday to consider asking Christ into her life. We set up an appointment to meet
right after the Thanksgiving holiday.
You can see now why I didn’t want to miss this appointment with Lauren! I had been praying
for her all week, and had asked a lot of people to pray for her, and now I might miss the
appointment because of getting pulled over!
I was rushing to the appointment, praying that Lauren would be there. There she was,
waiting for me. The cute thing was that she was standing there reading the Bible that I had given
her.
We sat down and we made some small talk and then I asked her if she had had some time
to think about her decision to become a Christian. She got a big smile on her face and said “Yes
I did think about it, and I made the decision to become a Christian, and I feel SO much better!”
Lauren and I have been meeting for some one-on-one Bible studies on the foundations
of the Christian life, and she is really growing. It is such a privilege to see life change in the
hearts of students here at UC Davis. Thanks so much for your investment in the lives of college
students like Lauren. You are having an eternal impact!
