In 1991, a remarkable thing happened in major league baseball. Two teams who
had both finished in last place in their respective divisions the previous year,
met in the World Series. The Atlanta Braves and the Minnesota Twins were both
trying to go “from worst to first”.
It was a classic series that went to a decisive seventh game. Game 7 was a
scoreless tie going into extra innings.
Being a Dodger fan, I was rooting against the Braves, who had overtaken the
Dodgers in the last week of the season to knock them out of post-season
contention. The Twins were my team that year.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, the Twins scored the only run of the game
to win the World Series!
Since then, there hasn’t been much to root about for the Twins. Last year,
they were the worst team in baseball. However, this year, the Twins are trying
to duplicate their amazing feat of 10 years ago. Currently, the Twins are atop
the Central Division, and Twin fans once again have something to cheer about.
For Jennifer and me, we have another reason to root for the Twins.
On May 14th, we were matched with a birth mom who was expecting to deliver on
July 5th.
Later that same day, we were told that our birth mom had gone into labor.
The next morning on May 15th (our 8th wedding anniversary), we received a
call telling us that our birthmother had given birth to surprise Twins!
Nobody knew that our birth mom was carrying Twins, including the doctors. Two
sonograms had missed the 2nd baby.
We instantly became fans of the twins and began rooting for them as they
spent their time in the Oakland Children’s Hospital Intensive Care Nursery.
We were initially told that they would probably be in the hospital until
close to their due date.
But if we’ve learned anything from history, the Twins will surprise you
when you least expect it.
Last Thursday, we drove from Lake Tahoe to Oakland to pay our twins a visit.
We expected them to be in the hospital about 3 more weeks. However, when we
arrived at the hospital, we were asked if we had brought our car seats.
To our surprise, the twins were ready to be discharged, 3 weeks ahead of
schedule.
The twins are home with us now and they’re doing great. They’re eating on
their own and they’re sleeping a lot. They’re healthy and they’re growing.
When the World Series rolls around this fall, I’m not sure if Minnesota
fans will still be cheering for their Twins. But I know that come this fall, we
will still be rooting for our “surprise twins.”
