Growth. It’s a natural occurrence in life. When you’re a kid, you can’t
wait to get bigger. Then when you’re bigger, you wonder why you ever wanted to
grow up.
Interestingly enough, ministry can be much the same way.
When we started this ministry, we had a vision to grow in our size and
influence on campus. We couldn’t wait to get bigger. But now that we’ve
grown, there are certain aspects of our small ministry of yesteryear that we
miss.
Don’t get me wrong—we are very excited about what God has done here at UC
Davis in just a little over 3 years.
In our wildest dreams, we did not imagine that we would have nearly 200
students in Bible studies, which are being led by over 20 students. We didn’t
envision over 100 students at our Fall Retreat and nearly 100 freshman in Bible
studies.
The excitement that many of our students have for evangelism and for reaching
the lost around the world has surpassed our limited expectations.
We are certainly blown away by God and his faithfulness. We feel blessed to
have been a part of this wild ministry ride at UC Davis.
However, our rapid growth has given us new challenges to overcome.
How do we maintain a sense of community with such a large group?
How do we make sure that new students understand our vision and our mission?
How can we continue to motivate and build into our leaders at the same time
we are trying to reach out to new people?
How can we minister to all the new people at the same time that our staff
resources are shrinking due to our new family situation?
These are just some of the questions we’re attempting to answer. We don’t
know the answers yet, but we’re determined to see how God will provide
solutions to our growing pains so that we can take this ministry to the next
level.
Please pray with us and for us as we continue to lead this “growing”
ministry.
Having an “Epic”
Time
Over the past several years, Campus Crusade has tried to be intentional about
reaching out to ethnic minorities. Many campuses have started separate ethnic
ministries to reach specific ethnic groups.
“Epic” is the name that has been given to Crusade ministries that are
focusing on reaching Asian Americans.
Because we have so many Asian Americans at UC Davis (about 1/3 of the student
body), we have tried to start our own Epic ministry within Campus Crusade.
A few weeks ago, we held a dinner for all Asian American students in our
ministry. The response was encouraging as 25 students showed up.
Please pray for our Epic ministry to grow as we continue to work towards
reaching the entire UC Davis campus community.
Praise
- We have over 80 freshman involved in our ministry.
- We have almost 50 students signed up for our Christmas Conference.
- Last spring, we conducted an outreach campaign on campus entitled “Body
Piercing Saved My Life”. This outreach idea received national attention
because of its creativity. Just last month a campus in Pennsylvania ran
their own “Body Piercing” Outreach and experienced a fantastic response
on campus.
Prayer
-
We are conducting a major
outreach Jan. 7-10th. We’ll be passing out 5000 newspapers on campus
related to the theme of death and dying. Pray for a good response to our
evangelism message that week.
-
Pray for our Christmas Conference
and the impact it will have on our students.
-
We are praying for 40 students to
go on summer missions projects, with at least 10 going overseas.
