The night was
dark...
no, no, no … “The night was wet” … no,
what’s another word for wet? Humid! … “The night was humid.” … No,
that doesn’t sound right. I need a different word for wet. “The night was
moist.” … MOIST?!
Ok, it’s official. Like Billy Crystal in the
movie Throw Momma from the Train, I have writer’s block. According to
the writing
seminar I once attended, I’m supposed to start off with a “hook” - a story
that will draw you in and increase your interest in reading the rest of this
letter.
However, I have been racking my brains all day trying to think of a great
introduction to an interesting story in our ministry or in our lives. I’m just
not sure what to write about.
Perhaps I could find an interesting way to tell you about our newspaper
outreach at the beginning of the quarter. Students passed out 4500 copies of our
Real Life News newspaper on the topic of death and dying. A special
speaker came to our meeting that week and spoke on how Christ gives us hope
beyond the grave. Eleven people indicated decisions to trust Christ.
Or maybe I could figure out an exciting way to tell you about our Valentine’s
Outreach. Students were invited to write their response to the question “What
is true love?” on a huge graffiti wall that we displayed. In addition,
students at the dining commons were invited to fill out a Spiritual Interest
Questionnaire, in exchange for being entered into a raffle for a free Valentine’s
Day dinner.
Maybe the most exciting thing I could tell you about is how UC Davis students
are beginning to develop a vision and a burden to reach the world. This year, we
have over 30 students who have applied for summer projects. Over 1/3 of them
have applied to go overseas.
In addition, we are very close to establishing a partnership with the city of
Shymkent, Kazakhstan. Our staff couple, Jason & Monica Chandler, will be
leading a team that includes 6 UC Davis students to Shymkent this summer to help
establish campus ministries in that city. We also have 2 students who will be
graduating this June who have both applied to be a part of a one year missions
team to Shymkent beginning this fall.
Hmmmm … maybe a personal vignette would be better. I could tell you about
our two boys, Jacob and Joshua. It’s hard to believe they are nearly 10 months
old. They are doing the army crawl now but seem very close to using their knees
more. Jacob, has decided that he likes to pull himself up into a standing
position and both boys are expanding their vocabulary with phrases like “dada”
and “mama”.

Yep! I definitely have writer’s block. The more and more I think about what
I should write about in this month’s letter, the more one word keeps popping
into my mind … MOIST!
Oh well, maybe next month I’ll do better! Please continue to pray for us,
our family and our ministry.
