That was the question that I was asked by a student just before our weekly meeting last week.
He looked familiar but I couldn’t quite place where I had met him before.
Then I remembered. His name was Mike and I had met him the very first week of school when we hosted a BBQ for freshmen near one of the campus dorms.
Make no mistake about it—Mike was there because of the food, not because of the fellowship. Mike was not a Christian, but as we began to talk, I could tell that he was open to spiritual things.
I can’t remember all of the specifics of our conversation, but I do remember talking about how to determine truth.
We live in a culture where truth is relative and you can believe whatever you want and nobody thinks anything about it.
I explained to Mike some of the reasons why we believe that the Bible is true and why we believe that Christ is the only way to experience a relationship with God and eternal life.
Mike listened intently and seemed interested in what I had to share. When we were done, Mike thanked me for sharing with him. I invited him to come and visit one of our weekly meetings but I never saw Mike again, until last week.
It turns out that one of our new staff guys who has a Bible study in Mike’s dorm area has been meeting off and on with Mike since the beginning of the year.
When Mike finally showed up at our meeting last week, he asked me the question, “Do you remember me?” Mike followed up the question with this statement: “you’re the reason why I’m here.”
I wasn’t quite sure what he meant but he went on to explain that our conversation at the beginning of the year started him on a journey to question his faith and what he believed.
He explained to me that his journey took a new direction about a week previously when he made the decision to receive Christ as His lord and savior.
Please pray for Mike and his newfound relationship with Christ.
Pray also for Shon, our new staff guy who is meeting with Mike and helping him to grow in that relationship.
Thanks for your prayers and your partnership with us in reaching students like Mike for Christ.
Last Thursday (just before Valentine’s Day), I gave an evangelistic talk at our meeting entitled, “The Myths of Safe Sex”.
I had never given a talk on this subject before and so I was pretty nervous, as you can imagine.
Overall, the results of the talk were encouraging. Five students indicated decisions to receive Christ and numerous students commented on how the talk had opened their eyes to some of the physical and emotional consequences of engaging in sex outside of marriage.
One girl wrote a deeply touching comment on the back of her card, confessing that she and her boyfriend had crossed the line sexually and that she is now pregnant. She and her boyfriend have made a commitment to purity and are making plans to get married, which I assume means that they plan to keep the child.
Please pray for this young woman—that she would follow the Lord’s leading and that she would be open to meeting with my wife for encouragement and counseling. At present, she has not indicated in interest in receiving any counseling or advice from us.
Please pray that whatever decisions she makes would be in the best interest of the child, as well as her own future.
